LI-DOG September Meetings to Focus on Nassau Dog Park Plans and Future Events

LI-DOG will meet on Thurs., September 16th at a new venue:

East Meadow Public Library

East Meadow

to discuss all its current Nassau County initiatives, the latest news from dog parks in Suffolk County, and plans for future events.

The general meeting will start at 6 p.m. so that we can discuss:

• Suffolk County dog park developments including planned improvements at Robinson Farm Dog Park
• Upcoming events including Pints & Paws @Mary Carroll’s and Doggie Nights at Eleanor Rigby’s in Mineola.

At 7 p.m., we’ll start the Nassau Committee meeting. On the agenda will be:

• Our Town of Oyster Bay dog park campaign;
• The latest developments on a dog park in Eisenhower Park;
• Sponsorship opportunities/dog park captains
• Hempstead Lake State Park status
• Other Nassau County initiatives

05/25/08 Nassau County Plans new Eisenhower Park Dog Run in response to dog owners. Also, a raft of emails from dog owners has spurred the Town of Oyster Bay to explore creating a new dog park.

04/14/08 Southaven County Dog Park Approved By Suffolk County Legislature.  Despite the vote there are still objections to it by the Suffolk County Parks Department. A table showing how your legislators voted and other issues regarding the dog park can be found in the story.

09/07/07 Blydenburgh Dog Park Is Now Open!   Grand opening on Sept. 7 celebrates Long Island's newest dog park.

08/22/07 Blydenburgh Dog Park Is Underway!   Construction has started and the new dog park should be open in early September.

08/21/07 Natural Borders Dog Park Bill Is Now Law! Approval allows off-leash areas on beaches and at Coindre Hall.

06/01/07 Five New Dog Parks Bill Becomes Law! On Tues., May 29, 2007, Steve Levy signed into law a bill that directs the Parks Commissioner to designate at least five new dog parks on Suffolk County parkland.

05/23/07 West Hills Dog Park Opening A Big Success!   Close to 100 dog owners came to thank Leg. Lou D'Amaro for his work to create a bigger dog park in West Hills.

04/20/07 Brookhaven Dog Owners Unite!   Brookhaven dog owners need support to create dog parks in Patchogue and South Haven County Park.

04/14/07 Suffolk County To Create Five New Dog Parks! More than 30 dog owners and their dogs gathered at Blydenburgh County Park to hear Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy and other legislators call on Suffolk Parks Commissioner Ron Foley to create FIVE new dog parks on Suffolk County parkland!

11/30/06 New, Bigger West Hills Dog Run Opens   A new, almost two-acre dog park at West Hills County Park is open and available to dog owners!

11/04/06 Work Starts On New West Hills Dog Run.   Construction has begun on a new, almost two-acre dog run at West Hills County Park.

11/03/06 Parks Commissioner Plans Elimination Of Coindre Hall Off-Leash Community   In a shocking development, Suffolk Parks Commissioner Foley says the new dog park at West Hills will provide an "acceptable alternative" to Coindre Hall.

07/13/06 LI-DOG Hosts Its First Yappy Hour®.   LI-DOG and Lila's put on a very successful Yappy Hour at Lila's Santa Fe Kitchen in Huntington.

03/19/06 LI-DOG launches Share The Park campaign at Coindre Hall.   LI-Dog has launched a "Share The Park" campaign to that dog owners know how to share the park, and that our activities don't have to interfere with their enjoyment of the park.

03/19/06 - Contract Talks On Fenced Run At Coindre Hall Suspended.   Leg. Jon Cooper confirms no further action on a fenced run at the foot of Coindre Hall will be taken until an alternate site is found.

03/02/06 - Contract for Fenced Run at Coindre Hall moves forward   LI-DOG is working to stop building of a fenced run at the foot of Coindre Hall by the Town of Huntington.

02/17/06 Dog Owners Ask Levy To Deal With Incident.   Dog owners have called for a response to park police incident at Coindre Hall.

02/05/06 Park Police Threaten Aggressive Crackdown at Coindre Hall.   A massive e-mail campaign is needed to keep our right to use Coindre Hall.

10/31/05 Blydenburgh Dog Park Approved!   County Executive Steve Levy signed into law a bill to create a dog park in Blydenburgh County Park.

10/14/05 - D'Amaro Vows to Expand W. Hills Dog Run.   Suffolk candidate says he will move quickly. Foley is receptive.

10/07/05 - Candidates For Suffolk Legislature Respond to LI-Dog.   Politicians running for the Suffolk County Legislature have responded to a questionnaire LI-Dog sent them regarding their views on dog parks.

9/17/05 - Leg. Kennedy Formally Proposes Blydenburg Dog Park.   Smithtown Leg. John Kennedy has introduced a bill to create a dog park in Blydenburgh County Park.

7/07/05 - LI-DOG Reps Named For Coindre Hall Advisory Committee.   Also, Leg. Kennedy of Smithtown supports a dog park at Blydenburg Park.

6/04/05 - Suffolk Legislator Vows to Create More Dog Parks.   Legislator Jon Cooper said more dog parks are needed at the May 25th meeting.

6/04/05 - Foley Speaks to H-DOG on Crisis at Coindre Hall.   On May 5th Parks Commissioner Ron Foley met with about sixty members from H-Dog to discuss the situation there.

5/15/05 - Proposal for Improved Run Fails.  A proposal to move and expand the planned dog run at Coindre Hall has failed.

4/8/04 - H-Dog Has Its Attorney!  Local attorney, Avrum Rosen, a 20-year resident of Huntington, and with his pup Molly a recent convert to the Coindre Hall experience, has agreed to set up our charitable organization!

4/10/04 - H-Dog Moves To Set Up Charitable Organization  Friends of LI Dog Parks will raise money for amenities at Coindre Hall and other dog parks.

3/29/04 - Community Dog Run Opens at Huntington Animal Shelter.  After three years of hard work, the general population dog run is now open at the Town of Huntington Animal Shelter.

6/29/03 - Coindre Hall Dog Run Becomes Law!  Suffolk County Exec Robert Gaffney, flanked by members of H-DOG and Leg. Jon Cooper, signed the Coindre Hall dog park bill into law on June 27th.

6/22/03 - Bill Signing at Coindre Hall!  On June 27^th, at a special ceremony, County Executive Robert Gaffney will sign the bill making Coindre Hall a legal park!

6/22/03 - Binder Bill Retracted for Now.  Suffolk County legislator Allan Binder (R-Dix Hills) has retracted his anti-dog owner bill that would gut a law allowing dog parks in Suffolk County.

5/16/03 - We Won!  By an amazing vote of 16 to 2, Jon Cooper's bill to create legal dog runs at Coindre Hall and West Hills Park passed the Legislature!

5/16/03 - Legislator Re-Introduces Anti-Dog Parks Bill! Suffolk County legislator Allan Binder (R-Huntington) re-introduced his anti-dog owner bill that would gut a law allowing dog parks in Suffolk County.

4/9/2003 - Taking Our Fight To Leg. Fields' District!  Given Leg. Ginny Fields' latest move to sabotage a Coindre Hall dog run, attendees at H-DOG's April meeting decided it's time to take our fight for dog parks directly into Leg. Fields' district.

3/21/03 - CEQ Approves Coindre Hall Dog Run!  The Council on Environ-mental Quality has approved a dog park at Coindre Hall as proposed by Legislator Jon Cooper!

2/16/03 - Dog Runs Approved At Huntington Town Shelter.   Feb. 13th, LIPA officials met with Huntington Town Supervisor Frank Petrone and H-DOG representatives to finalize the establishment of Dog Runs at the Town Shelter, Deposit Rd., East Northport.

2/10/03 - Jon Cooper Speaks at February Meeting!  Suffolk County Leg. Jon Cooper reiterated his commitment to making Coindre Hall the "cream of the crop" of dog runs at a packed H-DOG meeting on Feb. 6^th.

1/24/03 - Dog Parks do not Harm the Environment.  Martin Mador, president of the Quinnipiac River Watershed Assoc., wrote an open letter to the Suffolk County legislature this fall concluding dog parks actually provide an environmental benefit.

1/24/03 - Legislators Introduce Anti-Dog Parks Bill!  Suffolk County legislators Allan Binder (R-Huntington) and Ginny Fields (D-Oakdale) have introduced a bill that would make dog owners pay the county's insurance costs to create dog parks!

1/24/2003 - Legislator Jon Cooper To Attend Our February Meeting!  Come meet our biggest supporter in the Suffolk County Legislator and discuss with him his plans for a dog park at Coindre Hall and other Suffolk County parks.

1/24/2003 - Shelter Volunteer Saves LIPA Deal. The fearless efforts of Tom Stone, a member of the League for Animal Protection, has helped save a deal to create dog runs at the Huntington Animal Shelter.

12/17/2002 - Town of Huntington Supports Dog Parks.  Supervisor Frank Petrone reaches agreement with LIPA to establish dog runs.
