loving canine companions.
We're Almost There!
Leg. Jon Cooper’s bill to create the first two legal dog runs in Suffolk County at Coindre Hall and West Hills Park is out of the Parks Committee! We’re almost there as far as making this happen!
We just need the Town of Huntington to formally commit to building the fence for the run, which is being worked on now, and then, we have to get Jon’s bill past the Suffolk County Legislature. As long as the Town commits, Jon’s bill will go before the full legislature at its next meeting on Tuesday, May 13th in Riverhead!
We need 10 of 18 legislators to give their okay. There is stiff opposition to the whole concept of dog runs, and it should be a close vote!
What you can do:
Speak about our desperate need for dog parks in general and at Coindre Hall in particular at the public portion of the Suffolk County Legislature meeting on Tues., May 13th in Riverhead at 9:30 a.m. (Exit #71 on the LIE. Take Route 24 South. The Suffolk County Center is on the right after the jail.)
You can also address the anti-dog owner bill sponsored by Leg. Alan Binder (R-Huntington), which is scheduled for a hearing that day as well! This bill [IR 1346-2003] would force dog owners who want dog runs in their community to buy liability insurance on behalf of the county and it would ban any dog run within 1/4-mile of the water. Click here to read the article about this bill.
Call or e-mail ASAP your Suffolk County legislator and ask him or her to support Jon’s bill [IR 1217-2003] . Dog owners need to call only THEIR OWN legislator. Also, make sure to call your friends and family and ask them to call their legislator!
