Community Dog Run Now Open at Huntington Animal Shelter

On March 3rd, the Dog Run for all Huntington dog owners opened at the Huntington Town Animal Shelter at 106 Deposit Rd., East Northport.

The Run is approximately 90' wide by 300' long, enclosed with 6' high fencing, parking for 20 cars, two safety gate entrances/exits, and 3 waste stations with disposal bags. A 20' square shade building (open sides) will be added along with a water line and benches once the weather improves.

No-Fee permits are issued in the office at the Dog Shelter. You are required to show proof that your dog is neutered/spayed, and you must have a current license and rabies vaccination. Permits are issued immediately with a copy of the rules and regulations. Multiple ownership of dogs is fine, but no more than two dogs per owner are permitted in the Run at any one time.

The creation of this run, along with a separate, badly needed run for the Shelter dogs themselves, was accomplished through the efforts of H-DOG, Dr. Tom Stone, the Town of Huntington and the Long Island Power Authority. The cost of the two runs--$50,000--was allocated and split between the Town of Huntington and LIPA. This would not have been possible without the complete support and commitment of Supervisor Frank Petrone and members of the Town Council.

It took over three years to make this happen. It is for you and your dog(s). It is a wonderful facility. Please take advantage of it.

DIRECTIONS: From Main St., take Park Ave. south to Pulaski Rd., turn left (east) and continue approximately 5 miles to Deposit Rd. (slight right fork at traffic light), proceed 500' to Dog Run entrance. 106 Deposit Rd., East Northport 754-8772
