New Suffolk Dog Park to Open at former Robinson Duck Farm

A new 2.6-acre natural borders dog park will open at the former Robinson Duck Farm in Yaphank within the next few weeks. The news came in remarks by Parks Commissioner John Pavacic before the Suffolk Legislature’s Parks Committee on Nov. 19th. The new off-leash area at Robinson Duck Farm will be located on part of the huge, 50-acre field. Entrance to the new dog park will be on Montauk Highway where a new parking lot is being built. “Parks staff expects Robinson Duck Farm to be up and running within 10 days,” the Commissioner told the legislators on the 19th.

The off-leash area would be the second new dog park opened under the Five New Dog Parks initiative that LI-DOG championed and Suffolk County passed into law in 2007. The other new dog park is the off-leash beach opened on Roe Avenue in E. Patchogue in August.

As a natural borders dog park, the Robinson Duck Farm off-leash area will not have the usual amenities associated with traditional, fenced dog parks such as garbage collection, waste bag disposal stations or water. Moreover, the off-leash area will be run as a pilot program to make sure off-leash activities do not interfere with the nearby Wertheim Preserve.

We’ll let everyone know exactly when the new dog park is slated to open as soon as we have the details.
