Riley the Hero

Riley was adopted by Heather & her family through an ad in Newsday, placed by a Vet. The Vet had been providing basic care after rescuing him from a park. Although not much more than skin and bones, it was love at first sight for both Heather and Riley. Yes, at first he was a handful  learning how to live in a home, but with patience, individual obedience lessons and lots of love, he became a loyal and trusted family member. He bonded with Heather and still sleeps with her every night.

When Heather was very young, she had a severe reaction to a mumps vaccine, lapsed into a coma and emerged with a health condition that resulted in periodic seizures.  One day, as she was taking a bath, she had a seizure, slipped under the water & would surely have drowned, had it not been for Riley's intervention. He was in another room, sensed that something was wrong, ran to the bathroom, pulled Heather to the surface by gripping her hair & continued to lick her face until she regained consciousness. By his last action, he prevented her from choking on her own saliva.

Riley saved Heather's life and is "her hero!" Says Heather, "If it wasn't for Riley, I would not be here. I love him so much!" And if it was not for Heather & Andrea (her Mom), Riley's life would have been very different. They were truly destined to be a part of the same family.

Heather described her experience to the Suffolk County Legislature at a Public Hearing on Dog Parks, 9/17/02

Many loving and grateful animals are waiting for your adoption at shelters and rescue organizations. Open your heart to these deserving animals and you  will receive in return, their unconditional love.
