Local Group Working to Create a Dog Run in Valley Stream!

For those of you who live in Valley Stream it has come to our notice that there is a campaign afoot for the creation of a dog run in the Village. It has been initiated by a group – called Envision Valley Stream - of enlightened residents looking to make the Village more attractive and welcoming. This is one of several campaigns that they are running with this goal in mind. For now the campaign is represented by petitions, both online and off. The online petition can be found at http://sites.google.com/site/envisionvalleystream/campaigns/out-and-about/dog-park.

If you are a resident, please sign it and tell all your friends and neighbors to sign as well! Being a long-time resident I know how many dogs and dog owners there are in the Village, how badly a dog run is needed and how much it would be used. The current thinking is to put it in Mill Pond Park, a nice area with shade, sun, trees, water and relatively distant from residential property. The park is criminally underutilized so a dog run would be an ideal use of this space (don’t worry, there would be fences to prevent loose dogs on Sunrise Highway).

Envision Valley Stream does appear to have the ear of the Village pols so the group is in a good position to make things happen--if they have popular support. We at LI-DOG have now jumped on board and are excited to put our weight behind this.

We might also request on-leash access to other village parks (Hendrickson, Barrett) as a follow-on from this campaign. Apparently this right used to exist but was taken away due to negligent owners not cleaning up; getting this right back would therefore need to be accompanied by Dog Owners Ed so that the rules are followed and we don’t lose these rights again.

Let's make it happen...
